The Saltwater Soul Trio is soul, island and pop played by three people who have spent their lives doing exactly this. Kris Bradley sings and plays guitar. Shawn McLaughlin plays guitar. Barney Cortinez plays bass. Between them they have more than ninety years onstage and four decades of Maui rooms — beach bars, resort patios, jazz nights, and everything in between.

The sound sits somewhere between a soul record and a warm evening: Amy Winehouse and Al Green next to Bill Withers, Bonnie Raitt and the occasional island-tinged surprise. Three instruments, real harmonies, nothing oversized. It fills a room without taking it over.

That makes it a natural fit for dinner service, happy hour, sunset cocktails, wedding welcome parties, backyard gatherings and long evenings by the water — every set shaped to the space, the guests, and the pace of the night.

02The Players

Three careers, one band.

Not a pickup group. Three working musicians who each brought a full résumé to the room before the first rehearsal.

Kris Bradley

Kris is a recording artist and songwriter first. She writes her own material, records in Nashville, and has a double album of originals on the way. Her songs have also been licensed for national television, including Married at First Sight, Jersey Shore Family Vacation and Temptation Island.

Twenty-plus years onstage run from Nashville's Bluebird Cafe to The Key Club in Los Angeles and Webster Hall in New York, plus touring dates across the U.S. and Asia. On Maui she fronts the trio with gritty, soulful vocals and rhythm guitar.

Barney Cortinez

Barney grew up in Los Angeles on everything from the Beatles to Zappa, and has been playing on Maui for over twenty-seven years. He held the bass chair in Jimmy Mac and the Cool Cats for twenty years, played with the Gina Martinelli Band, subbed in the salsa outfit Rio Ritmo, and works regularly with Maui's jazz players — including Coltrane and Miles sets alongside Dan Kai.

He is the harmony guy in the band and the low end that keeps a room moving. Off stage: surfing, plus a martial arts background he traded back for the ocean.

Shawn McLaughlin

Shawn came up playing country rock in Big Sur and Carmel, California, and moved to Maui in 1980. He spent years playing the beaches and bars of Kāʻanapali and is one of the last still working from that old Kāʻanapali beach-boy crowd. Lahāinā stages followed: Fleetwood's, Kimo's, Pacific'O, and plenty of the dive bars he loves just as much.

He plays entirely by ear, which means he can follow a song he has never heard in real time. Off stage he is in the water — sailing, surfing, windsurfing. It is what brought him to the island in the first place.

Soul, island and pop is the core. Think Amy Winehouse, Al Green, Bill Withers and Otis Redding, alongside jazz standards, classic rock, country, reggae, and Kris's own original songs. Every set is paced to the room rather than played the same way twice.

Yes. The same material works as Kris solo, a duo, the trio, or a full band with drums and additional players on request. Tell us the room and the budget in the form and we'll recommend the right size for it.

Island-wide, including Kīhei, Wailea, Lahāinā and Kāʻanapali. Between them the three have played Monkeypod Kitchen, Fleetwood's, Kimo's, Pacific'O, Kāʻanapali resort properties and live sunset boat charters.

Very little. The setup is compact and self-contained — three players, a small PA, and power. If you have house sound, we'll work with it. Load-in and sound check are quick and quiet.
